Numismatist

In the classical concept, the numismatist is an auxiliary science of the Archeology that deals with the study of the currencies and medals. This science can give inestimable testimony of the interchanges and the economy of the towns, as well as of their political, geographic, religious history, etc.

Few archaeological monuments have the importance with which the numismatist studies since in them she has recorded the man his dominant ideas and by the same they reveal the character, the historical customs and vicissitudes that such monuments left us. Monetary the Classic one of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay includes/understands mintings realized by the Eastern Republic of Uruguay between years 1839 and 1855 in national territory. These mintings were realized completely within the city of Montevideo, first in the “Factory and Jouve Armory” property of a craftsman of French origin called Agustín Jouve and later in the House of Currency of Montevideo or Casa de National Moneda that was created to such effects.

This period in the Uruguayan numismatist was developed immersed in a full historical context of economic problems, monetary a nonexistent one, an economy practically in chaos and a civil war that lasted years (the Great War).

In spite of these difficulties several attempts of minting of a currency were realized that took national signs and that outside able to finish with the prevailing chaos, since until that moment the monetary one of all the different regimes circulated that had exerted to be able in the territory: corona of Spain, the one of Portugal, the British Empire, the United Provinces of the River of the Silver and, finally, the Empire of Brazil.
