Linux and the controversy

• The Linux name has generated major controversy and new alternatives have not taken in appearing to do competition to him.

1983

• In 1983 Richard Stallman it initiated Project GNU, in order to create a similar and compatible operating system with UNIX and standards POSIX.

1985

• In 1985, it created the Foundation of the Open source (FSF) and developed GNU General Public License (GPL), to spread software freely.

1991

• In 1991, in Helsinki, Linus Torvalds began a project that later was gotten to be the Linux core. This was in the beginning a terminal emulator, to which Torvalds used to have access in the great UNIX servers of the university. He specifically wrote the program for the hardware that he used, and independent of an operating system, because he wanted to use the functions of his new personal computer with a processor 80386. This he is still is the today standard.

Torvalds first published Linux under its own license, which was almost one license of source code shared (in English, share source) and that had a restriction against the commercial activity. In 1992, he suggested to change to GNU lpg.

Later, Torvalds said in an interview, “to register to Linux under the lpg was definitively the best thing than sometimes I did”.

The designation “Linux” was used in the beginning by Torvalds only for the core. The core was, nevertheless, frequently used along with another software, especially with the one of the GNU project. This variant of GNU quickly was made most popular, since there was no other free core that worked in that time. When people began to talk about towards this compilation like “Linux”, Richard Stallman, the founder of the GNU project, solicitd that the GNU/Linux name was used, to recognize the roll of the GNU software.

1994

This name gathers varied reactions. While the projects GNU and Debian accepted the name, most of developers and other distributions rejected it to Linux. Linux is the core or kernel of the free operating system denominated GNU/Linux (also Linux call). Launched under the license general public (lpg - General Public License) of GNU and developed thanks to the contributions worldwide, Linux is one of the software prime examples open source whose original developers followed the philosophy of the movement open source.

Linux was created by Linus Torvalds in 1991. In a moment, the community of Minix (a clone of the operating system UNIX) contributed in the code and ideas for kernel of Linux. At that time, Project GNU had created many of the necessary components for a free operating system, but its own kernel, GNU Hurd, were incomplete and therefore he was not available. He is by that in spite of the limited functionalities of the first version, quickly Linux was accumulating developer and usuary that adopted the code of these projects to use with the new operating system. Nowadays kernel of Linux has received contributions of thousands of programmers.
