You knew that… Altar to Hotei. Kyoto, Japan
One thinks that Hotei, originally, was a Buddhist monk who lived more ago than 1000 years. According to the traditions, one was about a loving man, good character and benevolent nature. Thanks to his prominent belly and smile, it finished being caricatured like the “Fat Buddha”. A common mistake is the homologation between the “Smiling Buddha” and Siddharta Gautama, the Buddha, the founder of the buddhism; sometimes, the turn fans cannot settle down the difference between both.
